Our main competition during the summer season is the Athletics Victoria Shield League (AVSL), with smaller competitions available in State Championships and specialist meets.
Across the summer season, there are seven Championships - entry requirements to these vary; some are open, some age-dependent and others have pre-qualifiers.
Contested during the summer season, this year from October 2025 to February 2026 over 10 rounds, the Athletics Victoria Shield League (AVSL) is Athletics Victoria’s summer track and field competition. With over 50 clubs and five AVSL divisions, clubs battle it out across ten rounds of AVSL to see who takes home the Shield, as well as promotion and relegation for the 2026/27 Season. You can find full information here: https://athsvic.org.au/avsl/ and the AVSL member's guide here: https://rb.gy/ez2t02
Athletes can register for and compete in as many events as they wish - and more events means more points for the club. Athletes are scored based on a performance scale, with a limited number (to be confirmed shortly with AVSL committee) of their best individual events plus one relay (when held) results counting towards their club’s overall score. To compete in AVSL, an AV BASE membership, AVSL package, or MAX Package is required.
The summer season offers the opportunity to compete in a full range of athletic track and field events, and many can be contested in one place at AVSL - events include:
Track:
100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000 & 5000m
Hurdles: 100, 200 & 400m
Relays: Male, female and mixed
Jumps:
High jump, long jump, triple jump
Pole vault
Throws:
Shot, javelin, discus and hammer throws
The rounds are held across a variety of venues which offers you great flexibility regardless of your weekend plans. We're a Metro club, but the great thing is you can compete at regional venues and still score points! Venues vary per round in zones A&B at the following venues:
Zone A: Williamstown, Doncaster, Keilor, Aberfeldie, & Meadowglen
Zone B: Knox, Casey, Frankston, Murrumbeena & Mount Evelyn
Events are are also held every round at regional venues in Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong. For regional events, AV is operating a priority system for local clubs. MUAC is a Zone A club, so entering a non-local event is not guaranteed.
For AVSL, there is no minimum standard and all are welcome to compete, regardless of their age, experience or ability - the points scoring system is age graded, so rest assured that just turning up and competing is always helpful!
State championships also have no qualifying standard, but these typically feature more challenging competition so teams are selected based on recent performance standard.
You can volunteer as a club helper!
All clubs must provide helpers to assist AV to run the event. We typically are required to provide 2-3 helpers for around half of the season's events, and these can be athletes, friends, parents or anyone you can convince to come along. Volunteering contributes to your season points total which could earn you a reduction on next year's club registration fee - what's not to like?
There are a few answers to this question. If you are signed up to the club and AV as a full, competing member, you will only need to pay to enter individual rounds (approximately $27 per round). Alternatively, if you intend to enter the majority of the rounds, you can purchase the open athlete + AVSL (for summer competition) package. Bear in mind if you buy a package you will still need to enter each round on the AV website (the price will just be ‘free’). If you are a recreational member, the cost of individual round entry is slightly higher.
The cost of championship relay rounds is covered by the club (you’re welcome 😊), but only for full members - recreational runners can't compete for the club in relay rounds.
Specialist meets are priced individually, keep up with updates as they are posted on their websites.
Championships take place throughout the summer season. In Victoria there are seven opportunities to compete. These are:
- Victorian U20 & Open 5000m Championships
- ProFeet Victorian Track & Field Relay Championships
- ZÁTOPEK:10
- Victorian Combined Event Championships
- Victorian Country Athletics Championships
- Victorian Junior Track & Field Championships
- Victorian U20, Open & Overage Track & Field Championships
You can find out more about these events on the AV website here: https://athsvic.org.au/seasons/championship/. Further details will be communicated ahead of each round.
MUAC is a club of many high-calibre athletes and it's well within our reach to take out the competition - however, we are currently competing in Division 4 due to previous years' results. Therefore, our primary aim is to lift the club to the promotion zone, such that we can climb back up the ladder.
To do this, we need to show up in big numbers and dig deep to promote ourselves to Division 3! Note that only full, competing members will score points for the club - if you're a recreational runner, you can still enter, but you will be counted as 'invitational', and your score won't contribute to the club's result. For that reason, we strongly suggest signing up as a competing member! Sign up here now!
Club meets are hosted and run by various clubs around Melbourne and the state. Note that results from these events do not count towards MUAC standings against other clubs, they are purely for your individual achievement.
Entry to these meets is administered through the AV portal using your Athlete ID. Check out the Club Meets page on the AV here: https://athsvic.org.au/events/club-meets/
AVSL is the main competition series in the summer season but there are other opportunities to score for the club. The AVSL, State Championships and are the only competition series that we and many other clubs compete in, score points, and maximise our chances of promotion.
Our performance each season determines which divisions we compete in the next year. We aim for good representation across the whole club - as the place to be for athletes of all abilities! There are awesome team vibes at AVSL and it’s an opportunity to meet people from other training squads, not to mention it is also an all-round enjoyable way to spend a Saturday.
There are further opportunities to compete in specialist meets to contribute to your individual achievements, see here: https://athsvic.org.au/seasons/specialist-groups/
The summer season can seem confusing - but fear not, help is at hand! Look out for emails ahead of each round where specific info will be given.
In addition, if you're part of a training squad, you can ask your coach, otherwise you can email summer@muac.org.au.
